Greek National Day - Oxi Day

oxi day

Each year Greeks celebrate this day on October 28 by wearing traditional Greek costumes, waving their Greek flags and having a public holiday.

This day is celebrated in rememberance of the moment when the then prime minister of Greece, Ioannis Metaxas, refused to let the Italian troops enter Greece’s borders on October 28, 1940, during the Greco-Italian War.

Oxi in Greek mean “No”. We celebrate the Greek troops saying “No” to the Italian and German troops. Part of the celebration include all the schools of Greece including military, police and fire brigade participating in a march.

All Stage 3 Greek students performed an amazing medley of Greek dances.

For the first time at Stanmore Public School, Ms Vezos had every student from K-4 learning Greek perform the Zorba.
