Technology

Learn more about how technology is used at Stanmore Public School.

Introduction

At Stanmore Public School, we flexibly integrate a range of technologies into all our learning spaces to support quality teaching and learning. All classrooms are equipped with interactive panels and students have access to portable devices including iPads and laptops.

In Years K-2, each classroom is resourced with a bank of iPads which students access on a shared basis, to support learning across the curriculum.

In Years 3-6, each classroom is resourced with iPads and laptops, and we also have an optional Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) policy.

Bring Your Own Device procedures

Stanmore PS offers a BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) program for students in Years 3-6 which allows students to bring personally owned portable devices (laptops and tablets) to use at school for teacher-directed tasks and activities. The BYOD program is designed to allow students the ability to choose technology that best suits their needs as well use technology that is both familiar and personalised.

The BYOD program is opt-in for families who are comfortable allowing their children to bring in personal devices. For those not participating in the BYOD program, each class has a range of shared devices providing the same level of access to the class teacher’s required applications, programs and lesson content.

As per the NSW Department of Education technology policy, mobile phones are not included in the BYOD program and their use by students is not permitted on school premises.

Types of BYO Devices

iPads are the most common device used at school and these are very easy to configure and manage by both students and teachers. Laptops are less common but are able to be connected to the network and function as a suitable classroom device. Very old devices (usually 5-6+ years old) can sometimes experience problems, especially if they are no longer able to receive software updates.

Please keep in mind that not all devices are able to join the network or function in the classroom setting for a range of factors. As many BYO devices are personalised in a range of different ways, it may be the case that your device doesn’t play well with the network in spite of our best efforts to help.

Applications

Your child’s teacher will indicate which applications will be frequently used in class. Most senior classes use Google apps including Docs, Drive, Classroom, Slides and Sheets as well as Seesaw and it is advised that devices also install a range of web browsers including Chrome and Firefox.

Charging

Devices are expected to be charged at home as the school does not provide charging facilities for low or flat batteries.

Safety & Security

  • During the school day, devices are locked in the classrooms.
  • Transport of the devices to and from school is the responsibility of each student.
  • Devices are only to be used under the supervision of a teacher and for directed tasks during school hours.
  • Devices are expected to be kept safely in student bags before and after school.

Damage & Breakages

Students are responsible for the safety of their own devices at school, including within the classroom and transporting the device to and from school. Students are encouraged to develop good habits when looking after their devices such as packing it away, not leaving it unattended or on the floor, not using it while moving around the classroom, etc.
