The Wellbeing Wheel

wellbeing wheel cover

At the heart of every child’s growth and development is wellbeing, a holistic state that enables them to thrive, learn, and live with confidence.

The Wellbeing Wheel is a framework that brings together the essential elements all children and young people need to reach their full potential.

Every child develops in their own way and at their own pace, influenced by their unique circumstances. But no matter the path, every child deserves support from the adults around them to grow into a successful learner, confident communicator, responsible citizen, and empowered individual.

The Wellbeing Wheel outlines six key areas that form the foundation of a child’s wellbeing:

Six wellbeing elements

Valued, loved and safe

A strong sense of safety and belonging starts with loving, trusting relationships, with family, friends, teachers, and community. Children need to feel valued by those around them and confident that they are cared for and supported.

Safety extends beyond the home and includes feeling protected in their communities, online spaces, and their future, including a healthy, sustainable environment.

Material basics

To participate fully in life and learning, children need access to life’s essentials. This includes secure housing, nutritious food, clean water and air, appropriate clothing, and access to reliable services like transport and healthcare.

They should have the tools and resources - from school supplies to technology and sports equipment - to support their growth and engagement in everyday activities.

Health

Physical, mental and emotional health are core to wellbeing. Children need access to health care services that are timely, appropriate and inclusive of preventive support.

Their developmental needs must be met to ensure they can grow strong, resilient, and ready to take on life’s challenges.

Learning

Learning happens everywhere, in classrooms, homes, and communities. Every child deserves tailored support that recognises their individual learning needs and strengths. Learning should be engaging, inclusive, and supported by families and community members who value education and lifelong learning.

Opportunities to explore, create, and discover help children unlock their full potential.

Participating

Children have the right to be heard and involved in decisions that affect them. Participation means having a voice, being listened to, and feeling empowered to contribute.

Whether through conversations at home, group activities, school events or online communities, participation builds confidence and a sense of belonging.

Positive sense of identity and culture

Knowing who you are and where you come from is vital for wellbeing.

Children need to feel proud of their identity, culture, language and background, and know that these are respected and celebrated by others.

This is especially important for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children, for whom cultural connectedness is central to wellbeing.

A positive sense of identity also means feeling safe and supported in expressing oneself, regardless of gender, culture, beliefs or background.

The Wellbeing Wheel reminds us that every child deserves to be supported in a way that is respectful, inclusive and empowering. When we work together as families, educators and communities, we give every child the opportunity to thrive.
