Chess Club Term 1

Term 1 Chess Club starts on Tuesday, 11 February.

Learn to be a chess champion! Coaching for students at Stanmore Public School is held on:

  • Tuesdays from 3:10 pm to 4:10 pm

Beginners to intermediate all welcome.

Activities include group lessons on a demonstration chess board or interactive whiteboard, puzzle solving and fun practice games.

Students earn merit awards by making checkmates, or by displaying skills and positive qualities, which all good chess players strive to develop.

Each student in the Chess program will also receive access to Chess Squad (chesssquad.com) which is an online teaching/playing platform.

Benefits of learning and playing chess at a young age

Learning and playing chess helps primary school children develop critical problem-solving and strategic thinking skills while improving focus, memory, and patience.

It can also foster emotional resilience by teaching young children to handle wins and losses gracefully and encourages planning and logical reasoning, making it a valuable activity for cognitive and personal growth.

Chess teaches children to think critically and evaluate potential outcomes, helping them develop strong problem-solving abilities.

Playing chess requires sustained attention and concentration, fostering patience and the ability to stay focused on long-term goals.

Remembering chess moves and strategies strengthens memory, while analysing the board improves spatial awareness and logical thinking.

Chess challenges kids to plan several moves ahead, teaching them to anticipate consequences and think strategically.

Chess helps children learn to handle both victories and defeats gracefully, building confidence, perseverance, and emotional maturity.
