Greek Independence Day is a national holiday celebrated annually in Greece on 25 March, commemorating the start of the War of Greek Independence in 1821. It coincides with the Greek Orthodox Church's celebration of the Annunciation to the Theotokos, when the Archangel Gabriel appeared to Mary and told her that she would bear the son of God.
Flags flew and a giant paper boat sailed across, filled with sailors whilst Stage 3 Greek students sang a traditional Greek song called Thalassa. This song is from the Greek Island of Kalymnos and is about islanders asking the sea to protect the fisherman. An amazing instrumental of the song was played by three talented Greek students, Pelayo with his clarinet, Lisa and Lucy on their violins.
The whole school enjoyed many performances from some of our Greek students. There were elements of ancient, traditional and modern Greek culture. Students held olive branches symbolising peace, growth and victory. Greek Native students recited a poem about a Greek little soldier.
The Modern Greek Dance Ensemble presented a lively belly dance called Kou Pe Pe.
