At Stanmore Public School we offer all our students a comprehensive Instrumental Music Program.
- K-3 students in 2026 can join the Junior String ensemble.

Why should your child learn an instrument?
Learning a musical instrument not only sustains and feeds the brain, but it also improves so many other cognitive and physical aspects of the human body!
Playing an instrument is great for your memory, it’s a way to meet new friends and it’s fun!
Instrument Demonstration
Here is an instrument demonstration that you can view to see all the band instruments in action.
Band is open to all students in Years 2-6
Rehearsal times
- Training band (for beginners, no experience required)
Rehearsals Wednesday mornings 8:00 am - 9:00 am in the school hall. - Senior band (for students that have been playing for 1 or more years)
Rehearsals Thursday mornings 7:50 am - 8:50 am in the school hall.
The instruments you can choose to play in band are:
- Flute
- Clarinet
- Saxophone
- Oboe
- Trumpet
- Baritone
- Trombone
- Bass Guitar
- Drums
Fees: Band
$20.00 + GST = $22.00 per child, per weekly rehearsal
Private music lessons
Private lessons run Monday-Friday, 3:00 pm - 5:30 pm, on school grounds.
- Woodwind and brass lessons open to years 2-6
- Guitar, drums and piano lessons open to years K-6
Fees: Private lessons
$50 + GST = $55.00 per ½ hour private lesson
$35 + GST = $38.50 per ½ hour paired lesson (subject to availability)
Part of being in band is also having a private music lesson on your chosen instrument. Music lessons run after school hours Monday-Friday.

Junior Strings (Years K-3)
Monday 3:05 pm - 3:50 pm in the Greek Room
Tuesday 8:00 am - 8:45 am in the Hall
Junior Strings is offered to all beginner string players from K-3 wishing to start out on a string instrument, whether it be violin, viola, cello or double-bass. This ensemble will introduce the kids to basic ensemble skills whilst gaining instruction to beginner instrumental techniques.
Intermediate Strings (Years 2-5)
Monday 8:00 - 8:50 am in the Hall
Intermediate Strings is offered to all intermediate level string players from 2-5 who have been playing violin, cello, viola or double-bass and demonstrate a sound knowledge of scales and an advanced development of intonation.
Students in this ensemble should be playing at approximately grade 1 AMEB standard or higher and expected to play major scales such as D, A and G.
Senior Strings (Years 4-6)
Monday 3:00 pm - 3:55 am in the Hall
Senior Strings is offered to the most skilled players in Years 3-6 who already have a sound knowledge of violin, cello, viola or double bass.
This ensemble performs at the Festival of Instrumental Music at the Sydney Opera House each year. This is a big commitment and requires students to learn and perform there significant pieces from memory.
For this ensemble, entry is by audition.
Fees: Strings
String ensembles: $17.00 per week
Private string and piano lessons: $46.00 per ½ hour
Invoices will be paid per semester.
