NAIDOC celebrations 2026

On Wednesday 24 June, our school community came together for a special NAIDOC assembly to begin our NAIDOC Week celebrations.
The assembly was run by our Aboriginal students, supported by our leadership team.
This year’s NAIDOC theme, “50 Years of Deadly,” celebrates 50 years of strong and proud Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander voices, culture, truth-telling and community. It also reminds us to look towards the future and continue to celebrate, support and strengthen the voices of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
As part of the assembly, K–2 performed ZEG, the Firefly Dance, which they learned this term during music lessons. Students used their handmade Firefly Zamiaks to help tell the story of the dance and add colour to their performance. Years 3–6 performed Ama Babanwal, a sitting dance that acknowledges the importance of family, community and Elders in Torres Strait Islander culture. Both pieces were inspired by the Wyniss Musica Viva performance, who recently performed at our school.
As we continue our NAIDOC Week celebrations, all students will be participating in an art project. Each class is painting stepping stones that will be placed around the school, representing our school community moving forward together into the next 50 years of NAIDOC.
