Students set sail on Sydney Harbour

Last Thursday, 30 April, a group of Stanmore First Nations students and their buddies swapped the classroom for the sparkling waters of Sydney Harbour as guests of the inspiring Making Waves Foundation.

Docked at the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia, the Making Waves yacht gave students the chance to become part of the crew for the day. They helped with jobs on board, learned new sailing skills and even took turns steering the yacht across the harbour.

For many students, the experience was unforgettable. Eliza T described it as “one of the best things we’ve ever done,” sharing how special it was to spend time with other Aboriginal students and friends while trying something completely new.

The excursion was filled with fun, teamwork and confidence-building moments, and reminded everyone that new experiences can open up exciting possibilities.

The sailing trip was one of the best things we’ve ever done. Being out on the water with the other Aboriginal kids and our friends was so fun and kinda different, and we loved that we actually got to help as part of the crew. We helped with jobs on the boat and even had a turn steering which made us feel really grateful for the opportunities we were given.

We also got to bring a friend which made it even better. We laughed heaps, learned cool new things, and just had the best time being out on the water. It’s something we’re never gonna forget.
