Strong results in debating challenge
24 Jun 2026
Stanmore Public School's debating teams delivered another outstanding performance in Round 2 of the Premier's Debating Challenge against Erskineville Public School.
The Stanmore Kookaburras (Maya H, Ava W, Charlie C and Eliza M) successfully argued the negative case on whether Years 5 and 6 students should complete a weekly quiz on news and current affairs. The adjudicator praised the team's strong rebuttals and well-reasoned arguments about maintaining a balanced school day.
The Stanmore Cockatoos (Sloane P, Adelaide S, Willa M, and Emerson B) were also successful when they took the affirmative position on teaching students how to use AI websites and platforms. Their persuasive arguments highlighted the importance of helping students develop the skills needed to use emerging technologies safely and effectively.
Across both debates, students demonstrated impressive public speaking, teamwork, and critical thinking skills. The adjudicator commended the quality of their speeches, their ability to respond to challenges, and the way each speaker confidently fulfilled their role within the team.

Why debating matters
Debating helps primary school students develop confidence, communication, and critical thinking skills.
By researching topics, organising ideas, and presenting arguments, students learn how to express their opinions clearly and respectfully. Debating also encourages active listening, teamwork, and the ability to consider different perspectives.
These valuable skills support learning across all areas of the curriculum and help participants become thoughtful, confident, and engaged students.
Our library isn’t only a place where students come to read, it’s a quiet and calming environment where students can relax and socialise with friends.
Student opportunities and activities
We offer a variety of programs both in classroom and extracurricular to help students build new skills, make friends and explore new interests.
