Choose water - the best drink for growing kids
21 Aug 2025
Water keeps children healthy, focused and ready to learn. Simple changes at home and school make it easy for kids to pick water every day.
Water is essential for our bodies to function properly. Drinking water helps digestion, keeps skin healthy and protects teeth. It also helps children concentrate and gives steady energy for learning and play. Water has no sugar, sweeteners or caffeine, unlike many packaged drinks, making it the healthiest choice.
Ways to encourage children to drink water
- Send a refillable, labelled water bottle every day.
- Pack water in lunch boxes and overnight bags.
- Freeze fresh fruit (berries, orange or lemon slices) to use as ice cubes.
- Add a slice of lemon or orange for a bit of flavour.
- Try not to keep sweetened drinks at home.
Drinks to limit or avoid
Cordial, soft drinks, energy drinks, sports drinks and some flavoured waters often have sugar or caffeine. They should be rare treats, not daily choices.
Why it matters
Sugary or caffeinated drinks can cause tummy upsets, poor sleep, fussy eating, unhealthy weight gain and tooth decay. Regular water keeps children hydrated and ready to learn.
