Early years literacy: supporting young readers and writers
At Stanmore Public School, we’re passionate about helping all our students build strong foundations in reading and writing. Through a Structured Literacy approach, our teachers use explicit, systematic, and evidence-based strategies to support every child’s literacy journey.
All of our K-3 and support teachers have been trained in the Structured Literacy Program - a proven method that teaches reading and spelling in a clear, step-by-step way and designed to explicitly teach our students the knowledge and skills that they need to break the code in reading and writing. In Kindergarten, Year 1 and Year 2, students develop core skills like phonics, decoding and spelling, while also building comprehension and written expression.
This approach ensures that every student receives the support they need to become confident, capable readers and writers, setting them up for success throughout their schooling.
Watch this short film showcasing some of the evidence-based strategies we use.
NAPLAN Top 3 achievement
Stanmore Public School's Year 5 2024 NAPLAN results for Numeracy placed our school in the top 3 of schools across the Metropolitan South Operational Directorate.
92% of students in Year 5 achieved either Strong or Exceeding in the assessment and this proportion, when compared with the Statistically Similar School Group (SSSG), placed our school in the top 3 of schools.
It is worth noting that the results for Year 3 students in Numeracy were also strong and well above the SSSG with 87.2% of students achieving Strong or Exceeding.
This achievement comes as a result of a number of years of strong professional learning and programming practices across the school and, of course, through the hard work of our students.
