Waste Warriors wrap up a big year
04 Dec 2025
Stanmore’s Waste Warriors wrapped up a busy year of environmental action and set exciting plans for 2026.
Our Stanmore Public School Waste Warriors have had another huge year helping our school care for the environment. At their final meeting for 2025, students proudly reflected on what they achieved and shared their goals for the year ahead.
What we achieved in 2025
Our student leaders worked hard all year and made a real impact around the school.
- Worm farm composting: Students learned what can and can’t go into the worm farm, and classes became much better at keeping citrus out.
- Cleaner playgrounds: More students took responsibility for picking up rubbish and putting 10c bottles in the right bins.
- Paper bag recycling: Classes made a great effort to separate food waste from paper bags so they could be shredded and reused.
- Better staffroom recycling: New recycling bins helped staff sort their waste more carefully.
- World Environment Day video: The Waste Warriors had fun creating a strong sustainability message through an engaging student-led video.
- End-of-year waste audit: Four of our senior leaders — Vincent, Darcy, Sophie and Lucille — helped Ms Cannell and Ms Carruthers sort rubbish from four playground bins. It was messy work, but they did an amazing job!
- Sustainability excursion: On Friday, 5 December 2025, students visited the Coal Loader Centre for Sustainability Expo to build their leadership skills and learn from real-world examples.
Goals for 2026
The team is already planning for an even greener year ahead.
- Install proper bin stations and add secure 10c bottle bins.
- Launch our new SPS Eco Code - possibly as a catchy rap! The Waste Warriors will brainstorm some ideas early in 2026.
- Add collection boxes for lunch paper bags in Kindy and Year 1.
- Introduce covered tins for use in the sandpits.
- Attend more sustainability excursions.
- Work with TASK and the school canteen on new green initiatives.
