Stanmore Public School’s Kitchen Garden program has been recognised with a national award for its innovation, creativity and impact.

We’re excited to share that Stanmore Public School’s Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden program has been recognised at this year’s National Kitchen Garden Awards!

With more than 400 schools in the running, our garden stood out for its creativity and the way it nurtures children’s growth and wellbeing. Congratulations to our Garden Specialist, Ms Tristen Cannell, for building a space where students can flourish.

Our student-led, water-efficient design was a big part of the win. Using recycled materials like old desks and tubs, students created an aquaponics system where fish and herbs grow together. Rainwater is circulated through the system with the help of a solar-powered pump. The garden not only produces food but also boosts biodiversity – attracting a lively new crowd of ibis, who Tristen jokes sometimes heckle her lessons.

Through pleasurable food education, students learn to grow fresh, seasonal produce and prepare nutritious meals. Along the way, they develop lifelong skills, a love of healthy food, and an appreciation for sustainability.

This award is a celebration of the power of public education to provide hands-on, meaningful learning experiences. We encourage all families to get involved and see the program in action.
