This event was started by the State Library of New South Wales, in 2006 and the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA) joined the campaign in 2007.
Blind date
Our librarian, Jan Metzner, plans to celebrate the day by delivering a wrapped, surprise library book to each classroom to share and enjoy. It's like a blind date with a book.
Each class has discussed or written about why they love the library and how they use the library.

It's a day to remember that our libraries are a place where we can get lost in an idea we are following, find an adventure we are seeking in a book, discover more about an issue we feel passionate about or get help from someone about something we want to know. These are all the reasons (and more) to celebrate the valuable roles libraries play in our lives and to re-engage with our libraries.

Think of the school library as the beating heart of the entire educational vibe. It’s not just a room with books; it’s an escape pod from the daily grind of schedules, daytime drama, recess madness, and classroom hustle.
It’s a haven where students can immerse themselves in the world of knowledge and imagination, free from the ticking clock. It’s a safety zone to unwind, catch up with pals, engage in intellectual banter, hit the books, channel their inner artist, and maybe sneak in a bit of game time (shh, don’t tell the teacher!).
Especially when the weather’s playing games or students need a breather from the chaos of the playground, the school library is a secret fortress. It’s the place where creativity and mindfulness are the VIPs, ensuring they get that perfect blend of learning and relaxation.
